How to add Blog Posts in Squarespace
As a designer, I build a number of client websites in Squarespace as one of the user friendly platforms available that make for easy DIY once the design is done and I hand over the reigns. The DIY phase usually starts with updating text, making small tweaks, and most commonly… adding their own blog posts.
For many people, blogging in Squarespace is straightforward once you know where everything lives, but it can feel a little overwhelming at first. That’s why I’ve put together this simple, practical guide to help anyone (not just my clients) confidently create, optimise, and publish blog posts on their Squarespace site.
1. Accessing Your Blog
Log in to your Squarespace account.
In the left-hand menu, click Pages.
Under Main Navigation, select your Blog page (I set this up for clients prior).
Click the + icon next to Blog Content to create a new post for your blog.
This opens the editor where you’ll build your content.
2. Adding Your Blog Content
This is where the writing happens.
Add your Post Title.
Type your content directly into the editor.
Use the + icon to insert images, headings, quotes, buttons, and more.
Break up long paragraphs and keep your text easy to skim read.
3. Adding a Featured Image
Your featured image is what appears on the main blog page, social shares, and sometimes in search results.
Click the three dots next to your post title.
Choose Settings – Options.
Upload your Featured Image.
Recommended size: 1200px wide (JPG).
Add an Excerpt summarising your post.
Add a custom URL if you want something clean and keyword-rich (e.g., /best-homemade-salsa).
4. SEO Settings (IMPORTANT!)
To help your post get found online:
Go to Settings – SEO, then complete:
SEO Title (under 60 characters)
SEO Description (under 155 characters)
Keep these accurate, short, and relevant—no clickbait.
5. Categories & Tags
Organise your blog for easier navigation and better SEO.
Categories are big topic groupings (e.g., Recipes, Business Tips, Lifestyle).
Tags are specific keywords related to your post (e.g., gluten-free, brand strategy, summer salads).
You can add these under Settings – Options.
6. Assigning an Author (Optional)
If your site displays author names:
Go to Content and choose the appropriate Author.
Great for multi-writer blogs or giving credit to contributors.
7. Publishing Options
Squarespace gives you flexibility in how you publish:
Save as Draft — keep writing later
Schedule — set a date/time to publish automatically
Publish — go live immediately
Scheduling is perfect for planning content ahead of time.
8. Preview Before Going Live
Always preview your post before publishing:
Check your layout
Confirm images display correctly
Verify SEO fields
Make sure your URL is clean
Ensure categories and tags are correct
9. Updating or Deleting a Post
To update:
Hover over the post title
Click Settings to edit
To delete:
Click the trash icon
Keep in mind: deleting is permanent.
10. Tips for Best Results
Simple, consistent habits lead to a professional-looking and easy to read blog.
Keep feature images consistent in size and style
Use clear, descriptive titles
Include at least one image
Stick to honest, useful meta descriptions
Make content easy to read with spacing and headings
