Why Blogs Still Matter (and How to Make Yours Work Hard for SEO)
I recently walked a client through how to look after their own blog on the Squarespace site I built for them. I think they may have expected a quick demo on how to add text, insert pictures, and hit publish.
But there’s so much more to blogging than that.
If your goal is to grow your visibility online, adding content is only half the job. The real power of blogging comes from setting things up in a way that helps search engines understand, trust, and recommend your website.
Because while your audience is reading for value, Google is reading for structure.
Why Blogging Still Boosts SEO
Search engines (like Google) love fresh, relevant content. Each time you post, you’re adding new keywords, new context, and new reasons for your site to show up in search results.
Every blog is like a new pathway leading to your website, another opportunity for potential clients or customers to find you.
It’s also a way to show authority and trustworthiness. Sites that publish useful, high-quality content tend to rank higher over time.
But here’s the catch: you can’t just write and hope for the best. Each post needs a little behind-the-scenes SEO love.
What to Include in a Blog Post
When I showed my client how to manage their blog, we focused on five key things:
SEO Title: The title that appears in search results. Keep it under 60 characters, use your keywords early, and make it clear what the post offers.
Meta Description: This short summary (under 160 characters) helps searchers decide to click. Think of it as your mini pitch to the reader.
Categories and Tags: These keep your content organised, helping both your audience and search engines understand what your site covers.
Custom URL: Instead of a string of numbers or random words, use a clean link that includes your keywords.
Feature Image:This helps with social sharing and visual recognition when your post appears on platforms like Facebook or LinkedIn.
For Example…
This Post You’re Reading Right Now Has:
• A clear SEO title: How Blogs Improve SEO: Why Blogging Still Matters in 2025
• A short, keyword-rich meta description
• Relevant tags like “SEO,” “Squarespace,” and “Content Strategy”
• A tidy, descriptive custom URL
• Structured headings that make it easy for both humans and search engines to follow
All of these small steps send signals to Google that this page is relevant, well-organised, and trustworthy which increases its chances of ranking higher over time.
Behind-the-Scenes SEO:
Even before you start writing, there are background details that give your blog a better shot at being found:
Alt text on images helps search engines understand visuals.
Internal links (like linking to your own service or portfolio pages) keep readers on your site longer.
External links to credible sources build authority.
Consistent posting tells search engines your site is active.
Together, these signals help improve your website’s indexing, keyword relevance, and overall visibility.
Blogging Is Still Worth It
Blogging is one of the most authentic ways to grow your brand online. It gives your audience something of value, showcases your expertise, and helps your site stay visible in a busy digital landscape.
So yes: Blogs are still relevant.
They just need the right setup to work for you.
If you’re already creating great content, you can make sure it’s paying off by supporting your SEO in the background.
Then there’s repurposing from blogs for social content…. but lets save that for another blog on another day 🙂
